Le opere dei pittori a volte sanno andare al di là delle stesse intenzioni dell’autore, arricchendosi di significati forse non da lui immaginati. L’Arte del Vangelo di questa settimana presente due autori non di primissimo piano: Joos Goemare, conosciuto più per le opere di genere che per quelle a carattere sacro, e Henryk Siemiradzki, esponente dell’arte accademica, legata alla solenne rappresentazione del mondo antico, ricordato soprattutto per i monumentali sipari realizzati per i teatri d’opera.
Eppure possiamo ricavare da alcune loro opere molto di più di questo, soprattutto in riferimento all’episodio di Gesù in casa di Marta, Maria e Lazzaro.

Painters’ works can sometimes transcend the artist’s intentions, enriching themselves with meanings perhaps unimagined by them. This week’s Art of the Gospel features two artists who are not among the very best: Joos Goemare, known more for his genre works than his religious works, and Henryk Siemiradzki, an exponent of academic art, associated with the solemn representation of the ancient world, best remembered for his monumental curtains for opera houses.
Yet we can glean much more from some of their works, especially with reference to the episode of Jesus in the house of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus.
